To make adjustments click on Window - Adjustments
On the right is the adjustments panel.
Click on the icon Levels - the one after the sun
The little triangles under the graph - you move the dark triangle closest to the dark area and the light triangle is moved to the light area.
You can click Auto but it does not always give the best option.Click Edit in the menu options - Undo to revert back to your previous choice.
Click Window - Layers and you will see the adjustment has been made on a separate layer. If you unhighlight the dot next to the original picture you will see the original picture is unchanged.
